The Three R's of Nonfiction

In our class, we have been using the 3 R's to investigate nonfiction texts.
Reading
wRiting
Research
We have been collecting facts from books that we read, informational websites, magazines, and photographs.  We decided together that we wanted to learn about bears.  We researched and completed our chart (all the while, practicing good writing conventions).  Then, using the facts that we collected together, we wrote our own class book about bears (in our own words).  We included all of the features on nonfiction (headings, labels, captions, table of contents, etc).  Next week, each student will choose his/her own animal to research, collect facts from reading on their own individual chart, and publish a book about his/her animal.
We learned so much about bears!
When we are finished, we will post pictures of our nonfiction animal books.

Health and Fitness Night

We had Health and Fitness Night at school this week.  Here are a few of the websites that the first grade teachers and I presented.  These websites are great for encouraging healthy living.  Kidnetic is my favorite.  It has lots of interactive games that get children moving (Even while they are using a computer!).

100th Day of School

We celebrated the 100th day of school on Thursday.  It was a great day to celebrate because it was also groundhog day and Kayden's birthday!  We are working on counting higher numbers in our investigations math unit, and yesterday we made a 100th day hat with 100 star stickers.  We found it was easiest to count the stickers in groups of 10.  In pow wow (our social skills time), we did a team building activity where we had to make a plan to cut a piece of construction paper into 100 squares.  The team that did it the quickest earned a new pencil.  Each team used the 100 squares to make a picture as a team.  We learned a lot about team work!  The 100th day of school ended in the most perfect way... Dana Health and Fitness Night!  We played interactive exercise games from kidnetic.com and we roamed the internet looking at websites that encourage healthy living.
It was a long, productive, and exciting day!
