Guidance with Ms. Hart

Ms. Hart visited us this week for an interactive guidance lesson.  We read the book, Dream Big, Little Pig!  by Kristi Yamaguchi.  We discussed our strengths and made a chain of all of our strengths.  It hangs in our classroom to remind us that we are all good at something and that everyone is important and special.
Thanks for the great lesson, Ms. Hart!

Teacher Appreciation Week

This week was teacher appreciation week.  So many of our students' parents showed their appreciation with gifts and goodies this week.  It made me think of all of the great teachers that I had throughout school.  I certainly hope they feel as appreciated as I have this week.  Thank you!

ClassDojo Student Logins

ClassDojo can now be accessed by students using their own log in. I printed access codes from our ClassDojo for each student. They can use this to create their log in. Once they have logged in, they can review their points from class. Points are based on positive and negative behaviors. Students can also customize their avatar.  Check out ClassDojo and ClassDojo for Students.

"How To" Writing

 How To Blow a Bubble

Our latest writing adventure... "How-To" Nonfiction. We focused on the author's purpose when writing.  Some authors write to inform or to entertain.  We wanted to focus more on the informative aspect of writing.  Students wanted to teach people how to do things that they are very knowledgeable about.  We decided what their specialty was, and they wrote instructions for how to do that activity.  Then, students were given the opportunity to learn a new skill, blowing bubbles with bubble gum.  They were given time to practice and time to plan, write, and edit a set of instructions.  This was the successful result.

Important Words in Our Classroom

Building vocabulary is critical in our classroom, as with any first grade class.  A lot of my students are learning to speak English.  It is essential that these students understand English words, their variations, and their meanings.  We encourage them to use them in their everyday reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

We love our "juicy words."  Students understand that our writing can become more rich when we add purposeful adjectives and verbs.  When students are reading, they find words that make the text more engaging, write them on a slip of paper, and place them in the correct bucket.  Then, on Fridays, we read through them as a class and decide if any of the adjectives or verbs we found this week are more "juicy" than the ones we already have.  Students use these words from their reading to enhance their own writing. We post other "important words" on a wall in our classroom and discuss them with each other frequently.  Important and juicy words are found in our daily lives (social skills), as well in our reading and writing.

Scholastic's Computer Lab Favorites

Mr. Massey does a great job running our computer lab.  Our students love spending time with him each week.  Here are some computer lab favorites from scholastic.com.  These are engaging learning games that students can use to improve in different academic areas.  In the top right-hand corner, you can choose grades K-2 or grades 3-5.
